Biotechnology applied to the agrifood sector
The Institute of Food and Agricultural Research and Technology (Institut de Recerca i Tecnologia Agroalimentàries; IRTA) has created a new genetic analysis service called IRTAGen. This service was started with the objective of being an efficient mechanism for use by companies from the agrifood sector.
IRTAGen not only puts the most modern equipment and the most advanced technology at the disposition of its clients, but also provides a scientific capacity endorsed by the wide ranging experience of IRTA's Plant Genetics.

Services:

Service for detection of genetically modified organisms (GMOs)
Service for detection of GMOs in raw materials and processed foods, with the aim of confirming if products are free or not from transgenic material in order to comply with the European Union labelling standard (EC no: 49/2000 and 50/2000).
- Basic detection
Determination of the presence of GMOs.
Certification that the analysed sample DOES or DOES NOT contain GMOs.
- Specific detection
Detection of the presence of Roundup Ready soya and the maizes Bt-176, Bt11, Mon 810 and T25.
- Quantitative detection
Determination of percentage intervals (from <0.01 to >5%) for GMO content.
Service of molecular markers
With the help of molecular markers (isoenzymes, RFLPs, RAPDs, microsatellites and others) IRTAGen offers a series of services that could be very useful for interested companies.
- Variety identification and analysis of pedigrees.
- Tests for pure hybrids and quality control of seeds and plants.
- Advice and consultation on plant biotechnology.
